Found Treasure

We are having a garage sale and have been going through old totes from when our kids were little. Oh the things we have found! We have had many laughs and a few misty eyes at times.

I found this letter Andy wrote when he went away to camp for a week one summer. Tracy went every year from the time she was pretty young. One year Andy decided he would try it and that one time was enough for him.

I will translate this letter for you.

Dear Mom and Dad,
I am having a fun time at camp. I miss all of you. I got homesick at the first night.
Love you all. Bye.
Andy

I remember this week that he went to camp. I knew he would have a hard time because he NEVER stayed away from home. Not even at Grandma's. It was pretty hard because there was no contact with the kids for the whole week.

Did your kids ever go away to camp? How did they handle it? How did YOU handle it?

  3. Hi Jules,

I personally have never been away to camp, but 2 of our 5 have. It was difficult leaving them, but they both loved it. This summer 4 of the 5 will be going for 5 days, and then I think I'll send our oldest down to his grandma & grandpa's. It will be a nice break for my hubby and I.

The letter you found is precious. What a neat post.

    Blessings,
    Carol

  7. My kids never did the camp thing. I'm sure they would have loved it. I'll have to watch for those opportunities for my grandkids. Though we do take them camping a lot.

I'm sure you'll treasure that letter for a long time!

  9. Sweet! I never went to camp because like Andy, I liked home too much. I did have a chance to go as a Brownie and backed out. I was also nominated for a Leadership Camp in middle school but would have required me going several hours away from home in the NC mtns. I didn't go and wish I had.

  10. Luckily I have another couple of years before mine are the "camp" age, but I dread it and look forward to it at the same time. I dread the letting go but at the same time can't wait to get a sweet letter like that!

  12. Very sweet letter. Good thing you kept it. I usually get intent on cleaning and toss loose papers.

My kids love going to camp. Don't think they've gotten homesick. When my oldest daughter was 13 she wrote me a letter from camp. "Dear Mom, I don't miss you. This is like a vacation from home." :(

Her Daddy's that way. He doesn't get homesick either. So from a Mom whose kids, for whatever reason, don't seem to miss her, I think it's sweet that your child did.

  20. Is it weird that I didn't need any traslation? I guess when you've got kids that age it just comes naturally. :)

What a sweet memory. I think I had a harder time than Ty when he went to camp last year.
